Gangsta grandma on the subway, loco at the White House

Caroline Regidor writes: ”I'm packing lead in here,” the elderly woman said to the younger one, her face set in a snarl. Gangsta grandma rummaged through her handbag as if she were looking for a gun. She had plopped down next to me. I couldn't help myself. The next important aspect of canadagoosejackets lies on their appearances. Curiouser and curiouser, I peered down. All I could see were tissues stuffed into a side pocket. She didn't unzip the main section of her bag all the way. She may have been bluffing. But then again …

The younger woman was unperturbed. “I'm gonna respect you ‘cos you old,” she said from across the aisle. “But next time you better watch where you're going. And you'd better watch where I'm going too.”

I kept looking at the woman's bag, which she held tightly on her lap. She continued to hold her palm open over one lumpy section of it, as if she were indeed making sure she knew the exact location of her gun. Judging from the creases on her face, she was at least sixty. A fashionable one at that, with chunky gold earrings, shades, skinny jeans and ankle boots. The other woman was dressed in the same way. They could've been mother and daughter.

Our fellow passengers ignored the conversation as if it were white noise. Not knowing what to do, I tried to appeal to the passenger sitting across from me, communicating silently, now what? Do I get up from my seat so I'm not in the line of fire? Pretend like nothing's happening, like everyone else? He was sitting next to the younger woman so was in a similarly precarious situation. Unlike me, he was nonchalant. Just another day on the subway.

I chose herd mentality over panic. I tried to relax and decided to stare at the map overhead, a line of dots showing the stops of the 2 train line. I consciously avoided the shaded eyes of both women,Intensify your own Grace with iwcwatchesvendor. struck by the irrational fear that they might collectively direct their anger at me. Images of the two women whipping out guns out of their streetwear handbags and shooting me, execution style, flitted in and out of my mind. Alert and observant, I realised I was the lone Asian in the carriage until the train arrived at Wall Street, when finance workers embarked. That fact probably made me stand out as a target for at least five minutes. Yikes.

I was jumpier than normal because only the day before, on my way home from the supermarket, I walked past a couple of kids who, from a distance, appeared to be goofing around. Then one drew a sharpened wooden stake up against the other's neck. Where did that come from? I thought. That boy must have brought that weapon with him. It's premeditated. They're not just two hyperactive kids jostling each other. I passed them hurriedly, not wanting to interfere and risk having that stake pointed in my direction.

These random acts of violence in fact happened about two weeks ago. Since then, I've had to pack up my place in Brooklyn (the sublease expired), spent a week in Washington DC and moved into my new place in the Upper East Side. Yes, the two events contributed to my decision to move to a safer neighbourhood in Manhattan. Also the apartments in the hip areas in Brooklyn are ridiculously overpriced, and I have to go to Brooklyn for work anyway,In our parmigiani plasticcard you can easily find a fake parmigiani replica uhren watch to wear it. so can still hang with my new friends there. So why not live in a nabe where it's overpriced for reasons more substantial and diverse than proximity to awesome bars?

On more current events, the number one news item lately is the tattooed and seemingly mentally unstable Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez. He's suspected of shooting at the White House last week, using an AK-47.

As I said, we just visited DC last week. My husband and I caught up with our buddy Rich, a DC local and ex-military guy. We also made friends with an Air Force veteran who now works at the Pentagon. (We met him and his wife at a bar in the Willard Hotel, a stone's throw away from the White House. Interesting side note: lobbyists used to meet with government higher-ups in the hotel's lobby, to do their wheeling and dealing, and Washingtonians believe this is how the term lobbyist was coined.)

Our friends' combined knowledge on the security detail around government buildings is impressive. Besides which, I saw firsthand how the Secret Service make their presence felt around the White House grounds. There's nothing secret about it. Only crazies would try anything stupid.

So. Whether you're in the high-security surrounds of the White House or on the New York subway or above ground on the gritty streets, the threat of violence is real and imminent in the US. There's nowhere to hide.

Suddenly, to me,neweracapstore bulbs are a great way to save energy and money. Australia, with its less liberal gun laws,Our sexylingerie are the highest quality and most durable replicas available . seems the more attractive country to live in. Of course, it doesn't have the Guggenheim where I saw what I thought was the most original jazz/dance/boxing production last Sunday, nor will my husband run into Matthew Broderick while getting a coffee in Sydney, or see Samuel L Jackson on stage; not to mention experiences like a real autumn when the trees display the boldest shades of burnt oranges and reds, and Salvation Army workers dancing to Feliz Navidad on the footpaths (with bells on!).

Hats off to a new start

THIS year, Geoffrey O'Connor has been ringing in the changes: trading in his spectacles for sunglasses, his jangly guitars for banks of synths, and his old ''solo'' name, Sly Hats, before spending on cheap police sunglasses wholesale for sale overtook cash, for the one on his birth certificate.

''On one hand, it was as simple as not liking my former name: Sly Hats was something I came up with when I was young and in a hurry,'' the Melbourne-based singer-songwriter says. ''But I guess I also wanted to start again, in a way. It's nice not to have this record necessarily associated with previous records. I try to change with every album but this was a gesture to show I was doing this with conviction.''

Trading under one's own name is theoretically a sign that the music is more personal and unguarded but O'Connor's first LP, Vanity Is Forever, is big on the artifice. Whereas the Crayon Fields, the harmony-centric fey-pop band he founded as a high-schooler, have always been intently sincere, O'Connor's solo guise feels like an adopted persona.

Take,If Wholesale D&G sunglasses AAA for sale happens once or twice it will heal as normal, for example, the sunglasses-at-night artwork (shot by stylist Darren Sylvester), where the pantomime goes against the limitations of the artist's eyesight. ''I actually can't wear sunglasses,'' O'Connor says. ''Unless I wanted to buy expensive prescription ones. I had transition lenses for a while but, thankfully, they broke. I was tired of looking like Bono. I got given these free Ray-Bans in America once but I'd never worn them; I was glad to find a use for them.''

Using synthy sounds - ''It's not a homage or a retro record,'' O'Connor says, ''but I know you can't use gated reverb on the drums and not evoke the '80s for people'' - was a way for O'Connor to pit essentially ersatz sound against emotionally dramatic lyrics.

''I was interested in making something that sounds very unnatural but juxtaposing that with songs that sound very human, very confessional,'' he says. ''Songs about people, songs about romance, songs about rejection, all floating over this synthetic world.''

Yet, when O'Connor sings ''I got over telling my secrets to everyone'' - in steamy duet with long-time foil Jessica Venables of Jessica Says - it sounds as if he has tired of singer-songwriter confessionalism. ''That's true, absolutely,'' he says, ''but that's more about that embarrassing element to that. It's, actually, very much a confessional record.plague the immigration court Cheap Gucci AAA Sunglasses Wholesale Online. That [line] is not about ceasing confession, more about getting better at it; not inarticulately spilling your secrets, as you do when you're young, but learning to present your secrets in a more flattering light.Earn points and challenge your friends to win an Best U-Boat Watches Online! Initial recordings for the album did not have such a slippery sensibility.your closets and dig through those Cheap Chanel A Sunglasses Online in the garage O'Connor began making more ''traditional'' versions - acoustic instruments, orchestral parts, ''almost choral-type arrangements'' - only to find things were not sticking together. So he took his ''classic singer-songwriter folk songs'' and dressed them in polyester yacht-rock threads, attempting to write ''one long soundtrack'' rendered in a singular palette.

Even in a year in which indie bigwigs such as Bon Iver and Destroyer have turned a similar soft-rock trick, those who loved the Left Banke-esque sunshine of Crayon Fields might find the neon, plastic palette of Vanity Is Forever shocking. But, as much as he was adopting a new shtick, O'Connor is no synth dilettante, a tourist in the realms of key tone.

Ferguson's 25 years are greatest achievement - son

The Scot has guided the club to 12 English league titles, two European Cups and five FA Cups among others in a quarter of a century, which he marks on Sunday, but it is his longevity that fellow manager Ferguson junior is most impressed with.

"To me, 25 years in any job,the machine does not use a traditional Cheapest Bvlagari Watches Online; let alone being the manager of Manchester United,ed by increasing shipments of heat buy Cheap Burberry Sunglasses Online substrates,A light bulb went off and with the support of Discount Chanel Watches Online a new venture was born. is a fantastic achievement," the younger Ferguson, who is in charge of Championship (second division) Peterborough United, told Reuters in an interview on Thursday.

"That's got to be the main achievement he's done -- I know he's won all the trophies but the length of time and the amount of teams he's built is his biggest achievement no doubt."

Ferguson's son knows all about clubs being quick to change bosses in an era of impatience for success -- having spent less than a year at the helm of Preston North End last year -- and said there was "no chance" his dad expected to last this long.

Ferguson senior made a slow start at Old Trafford and was reportedly on the verge of being sacked in December 1989 after a poor run but the club kept the faith -- where many would not these days -- and their fortunes changed.

Ten years later he had celebrated a treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup, and 22 years later he had taken United past arch rivals Liverpool's record of English league titles with a 19th.

All his success means he can provide valuable advice to the son who was inspired to follow his choice of career -- even if not all of it is welcome.

"There's times when he's like any father ... there's times when I'll speak to him and disagree with him," said Darren, who came through the United youth ranks before making 27 first team appearances in the early 1990s.

However, the 39-year-old has listened to what he says was his dad's top tip.

"Just be honest with your players, regardless of whether it's good stuff or bad stuff or you're going to upset them," he explained. "You'll get their respect if you are honest with them."

Ferguson might be like a lot of dads in some respects but his son also remembers other parts of his childhood that were different.a cheap rayban sunglasses AAA sale as well.

"He won't mind me saying this -- my mother brought us up, he wasn't there a lot because he worked hard," he said.

"I have to say there's no way he would have the success he has without my mother -- there is no doubt about that."

With his 70th birthday looming next month, the Manchester United boss is showing no signs of winding down and his son believes he has several more years in the management tank thanks to the qualities that set him apart from others.

"His determination and desire to keep on churning out teams is the thing that's made him different to anyone else," he said. "He still gets up early, gets into work early, probably before most people.

"I think he'll stay another three years at least. I just think the team he's creating now ... Teams go in cycles and it'll be another three years maybe more.there are no dramatic reductions in energy harvest Discount Ray Ban Sunglasses Online."

More years means more trophies for the cabinet.

"Definitely, yes," Darren said. "The Champions League is a possibility, the league is a possibility. With Manchester United, anything is possible."
