Museum marks Civil War anniversary

The Stephenson County Historical Museum marks the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Civil War with a special exhibit featuring items directly involved in the conflict. Included in the exhibit are a variety of weapons and ammunition, military clothing, medical supplies, and documents from the period.Online Belstaff Jackets Shop Sale
"It opened up in February," said Stephenson County Museum Executive Director Edward Finch. "We put the exhibit up because these next four years are the 150th anniversary of the Civil War."

"The Civil War monument has a list of all those who served in the area," said Finch.
Also included is a saddle that was used during the Battle of Shiloh, which was fought almost exactly 150 years ago on April 6, 1862. The saddle was used by Colonel John A. Davis who hailed from the Village of Davis in Stephenson County. Davis commanded the 46th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, part of the 4th Division of Ulysses S. Smith D. Atkins of Freeport was the first volunteer from Stephenson County to enlist in the Civil War and rose to the rank of Brigadier General. A replica of the uniform coat he would have worn is on display.
Illinois sent over 256,000 men into combat for the Union Army, ranking fourth among ‘free' states in manpower provided. Stephenson County sent 3,168 men, which was 72 percent of its eligible males. During the war, the draft only had to be enforced once in the area.
