Ottawa Senators fans fear for goalies ahead of NHL playoffs

Ottawa Senators fans can be forgiven a thought of "oh no, not again," watching a starting goaltender get hurt on Saturday night.
It's a movie they've seen too many times, and it's particularly scary when a spot in the NHL playoffs is far from secured.

The Stanley Cup playoffs begin April 11.
All things considered, it could have been worse. Ben Bishop's "lower body" injury (groin suspected), suffered during the second period of Ottawa's 8-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, is expected to keep him out of action for a couple of weeks, according to Senators head coach Paul MacLean.

But at least this time the top goalie on the depth chart has recovered from his own injury.
Craig Anderson, who missed a month of games with a severed tendon in his small finger, was able to come on in relief of Bishop to record Saturday's victory and was the starter in Winnipeg Monday night.

Alex Auld backed up Anderson and prospect Robin Lehner is standing by in Binghamton, New York, if needed by the weekend.
So, the fire is out, for now.

Still, something about this position and this team causes the community to expect the worst when a goaltender hits the proverbial canvas, especially at this time of year.
While people wear out the expression 'Goalie Graveyard' in reference to the Senators, history would suggest more of a goaltender curse, or goalie infirmary.

Watching Bishop go down and then hobble off the ice in obvious distress, set me thinking about the huge impact goaltender injuries have had on this franchise.
It isn't a stretch to suggest that, in recent seasons, goalie injuries have: robbed the Senators of their best chance at a Stanley Cup; cost the club millions of dollars; got one general manager fired; threatened another; and caused goalies to get bought out and/or cast off.

If it weren't for goalie "booboos" to use a Paul MacLean term, the Senators almost certainly would have won a Cup in either 2006 or 2007. Because of a debilitating adductor injury to Dominik Hasek, who was at the peak of his powers until he got hurt at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, the Senators had to rely on an inexperienced Ray Emery for both those playoff seasons.
Though Emery played admirably, he was no Hasek, and the impact reverberated for years.

The club was so ticked at Hasek's demise (he practised at a very high level during the first round loss to Buffalo, but refused to test himself in a game), they cut him loose and so he went to Detroit and helped the Red Wings win the 2008 Stanley Cup (Chris Osgood was the main starter in the playoffs).
Would the Senators have kept Zdeno Chara if weren't for Hasek's injury?

In the endless debate about why Ottawa lost Zee to the Boston Bruins as a free agent, canada goose parka are available from selective retailers all across the world. we forget about Hasek's injury as a factor. It was. If Hasek starts in that series, Ottawa probably wins, and big Chara doesn't get criticized for his play against the pesky little Sabres. As it was, the Senators made Wade Redden the contract priority, and Chara walked.
John Muckler was fired as general manager in the summer of 2007 due to a combination of things - but largely because the Hasek move backfired, and his trade deadline additions were weak. Muckler had Hasek in Buffalo, brought him to Ottawa and was looking like a genius until Hasek got hurt. Had the Dominator stayed healthy and led the Senators to a Cup, Muckler would have stayed on the job.

His successor, Bryan Murray, has also known his share of goaltender health issues. On the advice of his old pal Doug MacLean, the former Columbus Blue Jackets GM, Murray traded Antoine Vermette to Columbus for Pascal Leclaire and a second-round pick in March, 2009. Wisely, Murray used that pick to buy himself some goaltender insurance, selecting Lehner in the 2009 entry draft.
Murray needed that Lehner pick more than he realized, because Leclaire would be wracked with injuries over the next two seasons, the notion of him being a No. 1 in Ottawa a complete disaster. In 2010-11, while earning $4.8 million, Leclaire started 14 games for the Senators and won four of them.

By late winter of 2011, his team reeling, and fans calling for him to be fired, Murray pulled off yet another goalie trade, swapping Brian Elliott for Anderson. This one paid off, as Anderson played brilliantly down the stretch, was re-signed to a four year deal (let's see how that story angle plays out), and has been healthy, until the kitchen knife incident of Feb. 22.
Most of Emery's health issues were not on Ottawa's watch, the Senators bought out his contract due to office, character issues. Curiously, they were still paying Emery the day he walked in here earlier this month and beat the Senators 2-1.

Paris gets defensive

While marking the end of the fashion week cycle, Paris' fall 2012 collections were pervaded by a dark chilly mood. Buttoned-up, oversized, straight dresses prevailed, as silhouettes were structural and 'massive'.
A 'closed' fashion, indeed, expressed through collar-less coats and jackets paired with long skirts worn over trousers, reflecting the recurrent need for 'concealment' and 'protection'.
Little embellishment, large shoulders and thick fabrics seemed to prepare the new power woman for a hostile future, canada goose parka are available from selective retailers all across the world.

Warm winter a decidedly mixed bag

Forecasters say it will be unusually warm and feel like spring, or even summer, in much of the United States Thursday.
The nation is coming to the end of the warmest winter since 2000, and fourth-warmest on record.
One New Yorker told CBS News, "I'm almost ready to wear a bathing suit!"
Said another, "It's just great to see the sun, to be outside without jackets and mittens and gloves."
Across much of the country this year, Old Man Winter has been a virtual no-show.
Minneapolis has only seen 22 inches of snow. Last winter, the city got a whopping 86.
In the Big Apple, crews dumped more than 300,000 tons of salt on city roads in 2011. Today, the stockpile remains mostly intact.
"I've never seen a winter this warm, actually,Discount Moncler Women's Parka Outlet" said one man. "It's always been blizzarding or freezing, but this is really strange.canada goose parka"
Residents have also been soaking up the sun in Chicago, where the average temperature this year is 6 degrees above normal.
Forecasters blame the freakishly warm weather on the system known as "La Nina" -- a cooling of Pacific waters that pushes the jet stream farther north.
"For this past winter," says Accuweather.com's Justin Povick, "we saw the La Nina begin to weaken. Therefore, the waters over the Pacific began to warm up.Moncler Aliso Chalet Down Coats Outlet sale The northern jet stream was not as potent. ... Therefore, the temperatures are not as cold over a good chunk of the country.authentic moncler coats"
But not everyone is enjoying the nicer weather. For instance -- allergy sufferers struggling with an early pollen season, and maple syrup producers who rely on frigid temperatures to help get the sap flowing. One, Paul Boulanger of Turtle Lane Maple Farm in North Andover, Mass. says, "It's gonna cost our business $10,000."
The biggest concern for forecasters now is that the early thaw though could trigger more severe weather systems like last week's deadly tornado outbreak.
Says Povick, "Warmer temperatures mean more moisture, more moisture means a better chance for thunderstorms and also the chance for tornadoes ... Also, wholesale canada goose outlet heading into the upcoming hurricane season, warm waters are key ingredients that hurricanes gain their fuel from."

Want to look dainty in leather? Ask Valentino

With lots of black and lashings of leather, Valentino's autumn-winter look unveiled in Paris on Tuesday sailed into unusual waters for the Italian house, but stayed true to its subtly feminine esthetic.
Under a Fashion Week marquee in the Tuileries gardens by the Louvre, Valentino's first model stepped out in a cape-coat in black leather, supple as fabric, parted to reveal matching wide bermuda pants and white blouse.
Leather came as fluid coats in varying lengths, with buttons or curlicued toggles like the fastenings of a Chinese silk coat.Fjallraven Parka Outlet Shop Online
Front row, the US soul singer Alicia Keys and top model Natalia Vodianova watched the models file by in romantic chignons twisted behind the ears, in sleeveless dresses cut on the knee, one red with a leather breastplate.
Necklines were demure, mostly straight cuts that "focus attention on the face" explained the duo Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, canada goose parka the house designers since 2008.
With sleeves cut at the elbow, the handful of lace dresses and blouses seemed modest despite the transparency, unlike some designers who seem to offer up their models' bare skin to the onlooker.
A mostly black palette gave way to a handful of whites, a few prints, and splashes of the house's trademark red.
Short-haired fur jackets jostled for attention with show pieces like an elaborate coat in a patchwork of black textures, from the shiniest down to the perfect mat of velvet.
Later at Alexander McQueen, British designer Sarah Burton left the fashion crowd breathless with light, ample ball gowns in chiffon, feathers and fur.
Silver visors hiding their faces, McQueen's models walked as if blind beneath a canopy of silver wire and tiny lights.
Mongolian lambskin -- a deep, canada goose winter jackets fluffy fur -- dotted the first pieces of the collection, in shades ranging from white to bold raspberry, covering the shoulderblades or simply wrapped around the neck.
Sleeves were exaggeratedly long, while tiny waists were circled by silver belts with stylised knots at the front.
Dresses and coats were cut short, the models' legs planted in platform fur boots with a hidden, high heel, all the weight resting on the ball of the foot.
After a series of dresses in white broderie anglaise -- a type of embroidery with large stitched eyelets -- there were black mink numbers, like a deep-plunging dress that seemed entirely embroidered with balls of fur.Fjallraven expedition parka online

"It was very much the country girl discovering the urban edge,Peak Performance Expedition Parka Jacket" McCartney said backstage, adding that she tried to "mix the two worlds together but in an unexpected way."
Hem-lines were short, torsos were tight, and electric blues and white whites gave a pop to silhouettes that still felt sensible.
Panels of stretchy blue fabric and glossy blacks were sewn together with warm tweeds in a streamlined patchwork to create body contouring, flirty dresses with flouncy hems. The look was sensual, smart and sporty, complete with a peek-a-boo of skin behind the shoulder.
The collection felt fresh and playful, with a nod of irreverence.

Pretty little white collars in white organza popped up from necklines, swirling white embroidery adorned crepe bodices and sleeves, and jacquard — which can look overworked and old — felt young in precisely tailored long royal blue blazers.
McCartney is one of the few high-profile designers to refuse to use fur and leather, on moral grounds. In relying instead on crisp fabrics, her clothing escapes much of the heaviness and outrageous excess one sees at winter collections.

Androgyny and futuristic fashion light up London

Futuristic designs, bright colours, sequins and androgynous styles dominated the catwalks at London Fashion Week Tuesday, with designers drawing inspiration for their creations from literature, paintings and even their own husbands' wardrobes.

Serbian-born designer Roksanda Ilincic experimented with androgyny in her turquoise, burgundy, navy and ivory autumn/winter 2012 collection, which featured oversized jackets, loosely tailored trousers and baggy hooded sweatshirts tucked into tightly fitting skirts.

"My inspiration came from leisurewear, weekend wear, countryside wear so all the kinds of pieces of our wardrobe that are kind of somewhere hidden, canada goose parka" Ilincic told Reuters after her show in west London.

Menswear also provided inspiration for the fur, woven and ribbed jersey designs she sent down the catwalk, its influence most evident in a gold and navy flecked suit with navy panel quilted sleeves, a patched elbow brown blazer and red dungarees.

"It is a little bit about women rebelling at having to look immaculate all the time and wanting to become more free like a man. You know Katharine Hepburn with the trousers and man's jacket so it kind of started like that," the designer whose creations have been worn by U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, said.

Ilincic, who said one of her husband's patterns had inspired her, offset menswear-influenced elements with feminine touches like embroidery on silk, a revealing half-turquoise, half-navy maxi dress with an asymmetric open back and red tops and dresses embellished with intricate black sequins and beading.

Canada Goose sues competitor over alleged replicas

Canadian outerwear manufacturer Canada Goose Inc. is suing a competitor for trademark infringement, accusing it of making shoddy replicas of the distinctive Canada Goose parkas.

The lawsuit alleges that International Clothiers Inc., which is owned by Fairweather, has intentionally designed a logo and positioned it on jackets to mimic the Canada Goose Arctic Program design trademark.

Canada Goose is calling on International Clothiers to stop what it calls "deceptive trade practices," including publishing print ads promoting its jackets as "Canada Goose products, which they are not." But International Clothiers has allegedly done nothing more than apologize and doesn't dissuade customers from thinking they are buying Canada Goose coats.

Canada Goose filed a statement of claim late last month asking the Federal Court to stop International Clothiers from using its Canada Weather Gear and Super Triple Goose logos, "or any confusingly similar mark," which it says is very similar to its own distinctive circular logo.

That circular logo is what distinguishes a Canada Goose jacket from others, the company says.

"Canada Goose prides itself on, and has become known for, designing and manufacturing its clothing products in Canada, and ensuring that they are of the highest quality," the company writes in the statement of claim.

International Clothiers has been selling coats since December 2009 that, according to Canada Goose, feature not only a similar logo to Canada Goose, positioned in the same area of the right sleeve, but also several other similarities, including the look of the pockets.

"All of which make it highly reminiscent of a Canada Goose jackets, but of inferior quality," the company says. "While Canada Goose is a "Canadian success story," the claim says, International Clothiers "is a manufacturer and retailer of low to mid-quality clothing products," most of which aren't made in Canada, the outerwear company alleges.

The allegations have not been proven in court. A statement of defence has not yet been filed, and International Clothiers could not be reached for comment.

Canada Goose isn't yet claiming a specific amount in damages, as it writes in the lawsuit that so far only International Clothiers knows how much money has been made from the alleged infringement.

Canada Goose itself has sold more than $225 million in coats and accessories — more than 600,000 items — across Canada since 2005, court documents say. The products are sold in more than 200 retail outlets across the country, and the company says it has spent $2 million since 2005 marketing Canada Goose products in North America.

Canada Goose alleges that International Clothiers' jacket called Super Triple Goose is in itself a misnomer.canada goose parka An independent laboratory analyzed the filling and found that goose feathers and down constitute about one per cent of the material, the bulk of which was actually duck feathers and down.

Canada Goose has long been warning consumers of counterfeit or shoddily made copycats of its jackets. The company has a section on its website devoted to copyright awareness, which contains a list of more than 1,000 websites where counterfeit Canada Goose jackets have been sold.

Tibi Fall 2012 Collection

Tibi's Fall/Winter 2012 collection played with menswear for women, showing various cropped trousers paired with tailored, menswear-inspired blouses double-breasted jackets. These clean lines and tailored silhouettes were offset by slouchy knit sweaters in burgundy and forest green and flowy chiffon tops and skirts.

A few looks stood out from the collection. The first was a cropped pant and tailored blouse in green glittered fabric layered over a black shirt. Following a number of knitwear looks, the color and texture was pleasantly unexpected. The second was a white sleeveless peplum blouse and floaty skirt, both printed with blue and black bird silhouettes. A more feminine look than some of the preceding tailored jackets, it was a refreshing pop of color and print.

The models' messy ponytails,This is a 100% canada goose parka,we don't have anything that's 100 percent. natural faces, and bold brows kept them from looking too tailored or fussy, and worked with the overall casual-yet-put together vibe of the show. Although some looks appeared to be little more than duplicates in different colors, overall the show highlighted designer Amy Smilovic's creative talents while still feeling completely accessible and wearable. And if Amy has her way, it looks like cropped pants and menswear influences are here to stay.

Glossy leather stands out at NY fashion week

Shiny leather stood out during a particularly busy Sunday at New York fashion week, with both Derek Lam and Donna Karan for DKNY making the most of the material in its most highly polished form.

In what critics hailed as a strong collection, Lam sent his models through a maze of white frames in sleeveless paneled leather tops matched with skirts that were either long and sequined or hemmed at the knee with pockets.

Equally glossy was a futuristic, figure-hugging oxblood dress with a cheongsam silhouette; the same material reappeared in another look as the skinniest of skinny leather jeans.

But it wasn't all hard-edged, as the California-born designer threw in a white cable-knit sleeveless sweater that came across as practical and feminine when combined with a fluid white dress.

Huge buttons defined Lam's double-breasted jackets, and bushy fur collars looked especially appealing on a day when New Yorkers weathered freezing temperatures and a blustering Arctic wind.

More shiny leather turned up at DKNY, Karan's youthful and unabashedly urban diffusion line, for which a yellow New York taxi was pressed into service as the runway backdrop.

Ashley Greene, the "Twilight" star who is the latest face of DKNY, was among the front-row guests who savored a collection inspired, according to the designer's notes,This is a 100% canada goose parka,we don't have anything that's 100 percent. by the Beat generation of the 1950s.

Building on a trend that emerged at the spring-summer shows in September, there was no shortage of peplum skirts, including a high-waisted number in reptilian leather with a wide, waist-pinching belt.

Others who sent out their latest collections Sunday included the grande dame of New York fashion, Diane Von Furstenberg, the fast-rising Thakoon Panichgul, and British pop singer turned designer Victoria Beckham.

'Handsome Femininity' From Richard Chai

Richard Chai's collection was late arriving at Lincoln Center for his 11 a.m. fashion show this morning, so while the editors were waiting, they checked their e-mail. At 11:12 a.m., a press release popped in my in-box from Pantone, the color forecasting company, announcing its predictions for the fall season: Olympian Blue, Tangerine Tango, Ultramarine Green, Titanium, Honey Gold, Pink Flambé and other colors that I can't quite picture but assume to be rather bright.

When Mr. Chai's designs hit the runway, they were, as usual, predominantly based in urban shades of grays, blacks and navy blue.canada goose parka I suspect Pantone's report is mostly a public relations stunt to get its name in the papers. (It works.) But I mention this as a reminder that New York Fashion Week, with something like 350 shows, cannot easily be pegged to a set of trends for the season. Increasingly, it is becoming a series of fractured voices and images, probably a healthy thing for fashion since it means designers are recognizing the need for independent thinking.

"I didn't want to do anything that was tricky," Mr. Chai said. "I didn't want to create looks that were just for the show. I wanted it to be approachable and believable, but also be really aspirational. At the end of the day, it's pieces that I want people to wear."

Mr. Chai's gray and black blanket stripes were shown on coats, jackets and trousers for men and women, and later in his show there were sportswear options in claret velvet, wide-legged corduroy pants, and a print that looked like old wallpaper, but no Tangerine Tango. For men, he also introduced his new collection for Filson, including coats, a weekender bag and backpacks trimmed with the company's signature thin leather strips.

The idea, Mr. Chai said backstage, "was obviously the idea of youthful uniforms and a fun way to put things together, but also, for women at least, handsome femininity."

'Jackets edge conference rivals

After suffering back-to-back losses on Jan. 27 and 29, the men's basketball team appeared vulnerable. They had lost five of their last seven games, all to University Athletic Association rivals, and all on the road. The two most recent defeats came at the hands of midwest powers, as the No. 25-ranked Washington University in St. Louis Bears did away with the 'Jackets, 83-78 in Missouri, and two days later, the University of Chicago Maroons edged the visitors, 96-92.

Yet for the Yellowjackets, there truly is no place like home. Undefeated at the Palestra this winter and having won two early-season tournament titles in Rochester (the Chuck Resler Tournament and the UR/Holiday Inn Airport Tournament), the team sought to continue their home-court dominance and snap their losing streak this past weekend. Suitably, it was the same two foes — the Bears and the Maroons — who would challenge the 'Jackets on Friday, Feb. 3 and Sunday, Feb. 5, respectively.

Junior John DiBartolomeo, the reigning UAA player of the year, paced a superior UR shooting effort that saw five Yellowjackets reach double figures in the game against Wash U. DiBartolomeo's 27 points were a game-high, and the guard also dished out eight assists — most of them to sophomore Nate Vernon (19 points), senior Nate Novosel (11 points), freshman Kevin Sheehy (11 points) and junior Rob Reid (10 points) — to create a well-balanced attack the Bears simply couldn't fend off. The 'Jackets shot an impressive 53 percent from the floor in the first half and an even more astounding 64 percent from the three-point range to put the home team up by 11 at halftime.

The UR attack continued to run up the scoreboard early in the second half. Two free throws by senior Marcus Williams capped a run that stretched the 'Jackets lead to 20, to the roar of a legion of yellow and blue-clad fans. Wash U. responded with a 10-2 run of its own, which brought the Bears to within seven points. That did not matter, though, as three UR players sank free throws to put the lead out of the visitors' reach.

The Yellowjackets carved out a second win during the weekend in a similar fashion when they played host to the Maroons. The home team took early control of the game, building a nine point cushion on the heels of a 13-2 run that put the 'Jackets up, 17-8, early in the first half. The teams swapped blows for the remainder of the half, with the 'Jackets' lead slowly growing to 13 by halftime (38-25). The story of the 'Jackets' game up to that point, however, canada goose parka wasn't in their offensive exploits, but their defensive ones. The home team had succeeded in holding Matt Johnson, the lead scorer in the conference, to a measly two points in the first half.

The Maroons came out firing to open the second half, as Chicago's Michael Sustarsic hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the 'Jackets lead to seven. Continued UR defensive pressure prevented Chicago from doing more damage until the game's final five minutes, however, when Derrick Davis capped a Maroons' offensive burst that brought the visitors within one point of the home team.

DiBartolomeo and senior Chris Dende made back-to-back jumpers to give the Yellowjackets a five-point lead, but Sustarsic returned with his red-hot shooting outside the arc to bring the margin to two with 18 seconds to play.
In a last-ditch effort to claim the game, the Maroons chose to put their faith in the talented Johnson. His attempted hurl at the buzzer from beyond half court missed, however, giving the 'Jackets the win.

The men's team has now won 17 straight regular season home games, as well as 13 straight against UAA opponents at the Palestra — a streak dating back to the 2009-10 season. The team will face a true test on Friday, Feb. 10, when they host Brandeis University, who fended off the 'Jackets 78-64 earlier this season.

In the spring, pair it with a pair of high-waisted denim shorts or white denim. Transition it to fall with wide-leg jeans, v-neck button-down cardigans and slim fitted pencil skirts.

Peplum detailing: peplums are the latest trend for spring and there is no doubt that their popularity will continue into the fall. A peplum is a ruffle that flares out and cascades from a cinched waist, which emphasizes the slimness of the waist. Look for jackets and blazers that are cinched at the waist, as well as skirts and dresses with this detailing. It’s a classic silhouette with a sassy twist. In the spring, a peplum can look flirty, while in the fall, it can be intensified with a skinny belt and short cardigan.

Pastel and neon shades: two polar ends of the spectrum for spring shades are the trendiest choices for spring, neon and pastels. Electric coral paired with a cool and creamy minty teal can be a fresh combo for spring as long as the rest of the outfit stays neutral. To successfully transition the outfit to fall, pair a neon with neutral and classic colors. A neon coral cardigan with a navy skirt and leopard print flats tones down the brights while keeping things playful. Try pairing pastels with dark neutrals, like black skinny jeans with a pale pink shirt. Adding a touch of chambray in the form of a button-down casually and deftly transitions it to fall.

NWS: Small Craft Advisory in Effect Thru Thursday; USCG Advises Caution

The NWS advises inexperienced Mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, to avoid boating in these conditions.

If travel by boat is necessary, exercise caution, especially near reef lines and when entering or leaving harbors and inlets.

In addition the U.S. Coast Guard has issued a warning to Mariners about the hazerdous seas.

A release from the Coast Guard states:

Coast Guard Sector Guam warns boaters and beach goers to exercise caution in all waters across Micronesia through the week. The National Weather Service has issued a high surf and small craft advisory for all coastal waters surrounding Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan.

Through Monday afternoon, surf is predicted to build 7 to 9 feet in Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan. Areas around north facing reefs will be especially hazardous but are seas expected to subside below hazardous levels by noon.

Despite the subsiding high surf, a Small Craft Advisory will be in effect for all the islands through Thursday. Combined seas peaking near 10 feet can be expected throughout the week, making conditions exceptionally dangerous for small vessels and swimmers. The National Weather Service recommends mariners operating small vessels should avoid operating in these conditions.

Mariners should only travel if necessary and check the current and forecasted weather conditions prior to getting underway. These conditions are especially hazardous when entering or leaving harbors and near inlets and reef lines. Mariners should remain aware of changing conditions once on the water. Coast Guard Sector Guam advises mariners: if in doubt, don’t go out!

Boaters are strongly encouraged to have a VHF marine radio on board to monitor weather conditions, communicate with other mariners and call for help in the event of an emergency. The Coast Guard reminds all mariners that channel 16 is the emergency channel and is monitored around-the-clock.

In addition, marinas and local boaters are reminded to check that boats in port are properly secured, bilge pumps are functional, and all loose items are removed from decks. Report any boats adrift, pollution or other maritime emergencies to the Coast Guard Sector Guam Command Center at 671-564-USCG.

Before you take to the water, Coast Sector Guam advises mariners to consider the following:

Leave a float plan with a responsible individual who knows your intentions, location and who they should call if you do not return as scheduled.
Always have flares and other visual distress signals on board. Inspect them regularly; they can save your life and help rescuers find you at night should you be in distress.
Wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket and set the example for your passengers or paddling partners. Before getting underway, verify you have enough life jackets for everyone on board.
Maintain awareness on the water — be aware of activity around your vessel including changing weather, and always know your location.
Don’t boat alone — boating alone is not recommended. Recreational paddlers canoeists and kayakers often travel with a single craft and one partner, or even solo, but it is recommended you canoe, kayak or boat with at least three people or two craft.
Kayakers and paddlers are highly encouraged to use the Paddle Smart Identification Sticker.canada goose parka In situations where a craft is found without its paddler, this sticker permits the Coast Guard to quickly identify who to contact. Get yours today from the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Know your limitations — be honest with yourself and your companions. Your life and the lives of those in your party may depend on how everyone understands each other’s capabilities.

Lady Jackets' upset bid falls short against No. 8 Anchorage

The last time the Montana State University Billings women's basketball team played a nationally-ranked University of Alaska Anchorage team they just missed out on recording an upset over the then ninth-ranked Seawolves. Thursday night, it was a similar result, this time on the Yellowjackets' home court, as MSUB was unable to pull off the upset over eighth-ranked Alaska Anchorage as the Seawolves held on over the closing seconds to secure a 56-51 win.

With their four-game winning streak broken, the Yellowjackets move to 16-8 overall and 8-5 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action while the Seawolves bounced back from a Thursday-night letdown at the hands of Seattle Pacific University to record the win, improving to 20-4 overall and 11-2 in the league.

"I was very happy with how we competed tonight," said head coach Kevin Woodin. "I thought we were mentally ready to go and was very proud to see that from our players. You have to give Anchorage a lot of credit, are very talented and very well-coached; they guarded Bobbi hard all night, but we started making the extra pass and that opened some shots for some other people there in the first half.

"The big difference in the game came in the second half as we appeared to run out of gas," Woodin stated. "We had several open looks that we were hitting in the first half, but we just couldn't get them to go down there in the second."

A poor shooting performance in the second half cut the Yellowjackets' bid for the upset short as MSUB struggled from the field, hitting just 20.7% (6-29) of their second-half shots. Overall, MSUB hit on just 27.9% of their looks from the field and were out-rebounded by Anchorage 47-34.

Freshman Quinn Peoples led the way for the Yellowjackets with 16 total points including sinking four three-pointers. The Butte, canada goose parka Mont. native recorded 11 of her points, and three of her treys in the first half of play.

Behind Peoples, MSUB had an extremely balanced attack as six other Yellowjackets recorded at least two points. Bobbi Knudsen and Kalli Stanhope each finished the game with nine points while Kayleen Goggins recorded eight points. Knudsen recorded a game-high five assists and two steals and matched Stanhope with four rebounds.

Alaska Anchorage was led by guard Haley Holmstead with a game-high 19 points as she went 7-17 from the fiend and hit four of her seven free throw attempts. Behind Holmstead, Kaylie Robison went 6-8 from the field en route to tallying 14 points as part of a double-double that included 13 rebounds.

Despite the final outcome, the young Yellowjackets showed signs of brilliance throughout the game, playing at an extremely high-pace with the nationally-ranked Seawolves.

The game was close all game long after Goggins started the scoring off with a short jumper. MSUB would control the early going of the game and established a seven-point lead when Brooke Tolman drained her lone three-pointer of the game just six minutes into the half.

The Seawolves battled back over the next three minutes to eventually claim a short lead after Holmstead hit an open three-pointer, but the Yellowjackets would regain the lead with four minutes remaining in the half.

The lead would be extended out to five points (32-27) by the time the buzzer sounded for half time with the momentum slightly favoring the home squad which Stanhope attempted to bolster by draining an open trey with just 15 seconds ticking off the game clock into the second half.

But Holmstead would have an answer with a three-pointer of her own, and before long, the Yellowjackets would be scrapping for every point they could muster. At one point, the Seawolves went on a 16-8 run over a 13 minute stretch to claim the lead. During that stretch, MSUB hit just two shots from the field.

The Yellowjackets made a furious attempt to find the bottom of the net, but were unable to overcome the deficit.

As they have done all season, MSUB was able to out-score their opposition 13-5 in regards to points off of turnovers, but Alaska Anchorage dominated the paint and under the basket as they out-scored MSUB 34-6 in the paint. That number included an 18-4 advantage off second-chance looks in favor of Anchorage.

Despite the setback, Coach Woodin was still confident following the game that his team was making strides.

"I feel like foul trouble underneath hurt us down the stretch as we weren't able to compete with their three, four and five girls under the basket," Woodin said. "But I was very proud of our team because they fought all the way to the end. We are looking forward to this last segment of the season and it is important that we continue to work hard all the way through to the end."

The Yellowjackets will now prepare to hit the road for the final time this season. MSUB will first travel to Central Washington University on Thursday, Feb. 9 before turning their focus on Northwest Nazarene University on Saturday, Feb. 10. Thursday's game will tip off at 7 p.m. while Saturday's match will commence at 1:30 p.m.

Fleecing Out the Cold

Most folks fall into two groups when it comes to the weather – those that hate the cold and those that hate the heat. I am definitely in the former. I can't stand to be cold. Being cold will get me off the water a lot quicker than being hot will be. I've found lots of ways to cool off in the summer but I don't find many ways to get warm in the winter save for putting on my layers of clothes. Which makes me feel like Ralphie's little brother in A Christmas Story wiggling around on his back trying to get up but failing to do so because he has so much clothing on his body.

Not to mention, fishing can be cumbersome with bulky clothing and parkas on to knock the cold off. You get your rod butts caught the sleeves, you get your line caught in bulky clasps and zippers and it makes fishing more frustrating that fishing in the extreme elements already can be.

We've all seen that thinner weather material like that made by North Face. Now there is a fully functional,Buying a canada goose parka from seller in another country. extremely warm and wind stopping piece designed just for fishermen. The Frabill Fleece jacket doesn't look like a piece that would be so warm because it doesn't have that bulk you're used to in warm fishing jackets.

The designers packed a bunch of features into this good looking a functional jacket. Starting with the collar, the zipper goes all the way up to form a very warm and protective neck and low face guard. Worn with the Frabill Fleece hat and you can keep all the cold air and spray from the lake off you while fishing or running down the lake in those cold winter months.

There are three pockets on the jacket – one on either side to keep your hands warm or hold your keys and one on the chest that is perfect for holding sunglasses or cell phones. The pockets are soft and seemed to dry quickly when used to store wet hands after handling fish and wet lures.

There is a draw string around the waist of the jacket that allows you to snug the fit around your waist to hold the elements at bay. We also like the longer cut in the back of the jacket to avoid that cool gentle breeze that often trickles down your backside as you bend over to work on tackle or unhook fish in the boat or as you race down the lake to the next spot on those cold mornings.

There is extra taslan nylon protective overlay on the shoulders, neck, elbows and sleeve cuffs to keep the wind and water out. When fully zipped, we were amazed how well it knocked the wind down and kept us warm. Most days this mild winter, we've just worn this fleece jacket with a hoodie and not needed any additional clothing this winter to cover our upper torso.

A Dupont Teflon fabric protector covers the fleece keeping it water and stain resistant. We love that we wear the jacket fishing and then just spray some febreeze on it and hang it up outside to air out and it seems to remove the odor nicely from the garment. I wear it everywhere now.

One last feature I like about the jacket is the vented arm pits. Each side of the jacket under the arms features a zipper that you can open to vent the jacket from underneath. That's a neat feature for those days when it seems to go back and forth between being cool on a boat ride but the sun warming you up and making it feel hotter than it really is.

The jacket is very lightweight as well, so you don't feel like your fishing all day with a 100 pounds of clothing on. Folks often don't realize why they are so much more tired in the winter when they fish. The body will expend more energy to stay warm and if anglers wear too much clothing, the extra weight of the garments will fatigue them faster.

So having wind stopping power in a light garment makes the Frabill Fleece jacket a must have for serious anglers. Wear it as a middle layer on very cold days or your single outer layer on the not-so-cold days.

Hot seat in a cold place

Only in Montreal do you find the principal owner of a sports franchise outdoors in a snowstorm answering questions about his team's star-crossed season.

Geoff Molson is from here. He knew what he was getting into when he bought the Canadiens.

And this is how we do Winter Classics in these parts.

As snowflakes fell on Hayward Park in LaSalle on Tuesday afternoon, Molson faced a scrum of television cameras and hockey reporters wielding microphones and soggy notebooks. The scion of a great Montreal family was wearing a Canadiens tuque, a Canada Goose jacket and the knowing smile of a man who fully expected to find himself on a hot seat in a cold place.

Molson and the attendant media mob were ostensibly at Hayward Park for the opening of a snazzy new outdoor hockey rink. The LaSalle facility is the fourth built by the Children's Foundation's Bleu Blanc Rouge, a program to encourage physical activity in the city's less advantaged neighbourhoods.

Before 50 local kids took to the new ice with David Desharnais and Raphael Diaz of the Canadiens, there were speeches by Molson, LaSalle borough mayor Manon Barbe and Daniel Boyer, secretary general of the Fédération des travailleurs du Québec (the trade union group is a sponsor of the outdoor rink program). Then Molson posed for a few photos before conducting his news conference.

The first questions weren't about the joys of outdoor hockey. And Molson didn't expect to do much skating.

"It's the first time I've been in front of the media since the decision to replace Jacques Martin," Molson said. "So no,canada goose parka I didn't think this would be a day off from hockey questions."

The owner acknowledged what every sentient Montreal hockey fan has known for a while: "This has been a disappointing season so far."

But Molson reaffirmed his support of interim head coach Randy Cunneyworth and general manager Pierre Gauthier. He said a thorough evaluation of team management will come at the end of the season.

"We're trying to stay focused on having a winning team," Molson said. "We're trying to turn things around."

Molson characterized the Canadiens' season to date as "soft, underperforming."

"If the second half is anything like the first half," he said, "it will be a disappointment for everybody."

He would not venture a prediction on his team's chances of making the playoffs.

"We have a half-season to play," Molson said. "We're still hoping to make it. You have to continue to believe you can make the playoffs . until you can't."

Molson said he had "learned a lot" from the firestorm that erupted after Martin was sacked and replaced by Cunneyworth, a unilingual anglophone. Molson underscored the point he made in an official statement issued two days after the Cunneyworth appointment.

"As a family that's been part of this community for 225 years, we certainly understand Quebec culture," Molson said. "There is no question that we support French and English. There is no question that we respect our fans and the culture of Quebec."

Molson said Gauthier has his support in the decisions the general manager has made this season, including the dismissal of Martin, the appointment of Cunneyworth and the trade that sent Michael Cammalleri to Calgary.

The owner said he does not attempt to micromanage the team's hockey decisions.

Molson would not venture a prediction on whether the Canadiens would be buyers or sellers at the February trade deadline.

"You have to hope for the best," he said. "As long as you don't give up too much of your long-term potential and you focus on the balance between getting there now and building for the future, then hopefully it'll pay off."

A year ago, Bleu Blanc Rouge opened a rink at Willibrord Park in Verdun.

Facilities had previously been built in the Villeray-Saint Michel-Park Extension and Montreal North boroughs. A fifth rink - state of the outdoor art, with 200-by-85-foot dimensions matching the Bell Centre - will open next year at Confederation Park in N.D.G.

LaSalle is a multi-ethnic neighbourhood with a substantial Italian-Canadian population. A demographic profile would also include La-Sallois of Scottish, Irish, East Indian, Chinese and Caribbean ancestry.

Former Canadiens from LaSalle include Réjean Houle (who took a spin with the kids on the new rink), Dollard St. Laurent and Jacques Lemaire.

I used to think of LaSalle as a working-and middle-class neighbourhood where everyone was making ends meet. Father John Walsh disabused me of that notion.

When I visited St. John Brébeuf Church to do a story on the Hope food bank a couple of years ago, Walsh said more than 30 per cent of LaSalle's 73,000 residents live below the poverty line. The borough has almost 4,000 single parent households, most led by women, living on less than $28,000 a year.

"Poverty is a problem that spurs other problems that become major problems," Walsh told me. "Families break up. Kids don't have money, and one of the problems in LaSalle is teenage gambling.

"I go over to the brasserie once in a while, and it's morning, people are having breakfast and they're already on the video slot machines. The teenagers borrow $10 and they're $20 down, then $30 down."

There are no such temptations at Hayward Park. Hockey will not solve all of society's problems, but a modern facility for healthy outdoor activities is a start.
