SLIDESHOW: New York, London, Milan and Paris: 4 cities, 5 trends

Thousands of outfits later, with probably every hemline, colour and silhouette turning up somewhere on the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris, fashion insiders have started to focus on trends they think will have the most influence on style in the second half of the year.
There was a wearability to many of the clothes paraded in front of retailers, editors and stylists, which might not have made the most exciting show seasons, but could translate into solid sales.
"Designers are understanding that women don't dress in gowns," says Brandon Holley, editor-in-chief of Lucky magazine. "It was all about pieces you could work with. Now the question is, what can you break down and put into your wardrobe?"
Colleen Sherin, senior fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue,Discount Woolrich Jackets Shopsays the "big idea" that stuck wholesale canada goose outlet with her throughout the previews was one of eclectic elegance. It's a more democratic style that more women will be able to participate in, she notes, because it's not about a single must-have piece. It's about creating an overall look that can be achieved with the individual pieces that best suOnline Spyder Outlet Shopit your body and life.
Five trends that were strong in the four big fashion capitals: layered separates, interesting fabrics, coats, military and melancholy.
LAYERED SEPARATES: Forget the simple dress and be ready to add a few extra minutes to your morning routine to put together your outfit, says Linda Wells,Cheap ArcTeryx Alpha SaleAllure magazine canada goose parka jackets editor-in-chief.
If you like the long-sleeve sheath dress, then think about how it will look with a vest or jacket on top. If you like more of the A-line dress shape, start gathering chunky knit cardigans and blanket coats.
"This is going to be a complicated way to dress," Wells says. "It's very interesting, but it's not about running out the door in one great dress, and your coat is not just a coat, but it's a coat with a cape over it, maybe a coat with a vest, a coat with a detachable fur — and a turtleneck."

Highs in 70s in March? Warm spell expected to last

Break out the beach towels, flip-flops and baseball bats: Warm weather is arriving early across much of the U.ralph lauren hoodyS., even in northern states where perplexed residents are swapping their snow shovels for golf clubs.
The unseasonably warm weather was pushing throngs of people outside to play Tuesday from the Plains to New England, where March is feeling like May with temperatures ranging from the high 60s to low 80s — smashing dozens of record highs.
Boaters were cruising along the river in downtown Chicago amid one of Illinois' warmest winters on record. Golfers were smacking balls at a central Minnesota course that opened weeks earlier than last year.
And an ice-breaking mission on Maine's Kennebec River on Tuesday was the shortest in recent memory — because the Coast Guard found no ice.
"It's almost like we skipped winter and now we're going to skip spring, too," said Gino Izzi, a senior meteorologist at the National Weather Service's Chicago office.
Forecasters are predicting that temperatures will likely remain unusually high through March.
Izzi said the weather pattern is a random but normal fluctuation. A jet stream moving north to south on the West Coast is pushing an opposite, seesaw effect in the rest of the nation. Atmospheric patterns, including the Pacific phenomenon known as La Nina, have kept cold air bottled up over Canada and contributed to the warmer winter in snow-accustomed parts of the continental U.S.
Tuesday's warm weather was raising some concerns, including upping the risk of wildfires. The usually warm, dry and windy conditions prompted six North Dakota counties to declare fire emergencies and institute burn bans.
Another effect of rising temperatures: Americans' belief in global warming, according to a December poll that found 62 percent of people believed the Earth was getting warmer, an increase from previous polls. Nearly half of them based that belief on personal weather observations, University of Michigan and Muhlenberg College researchers found.
In Minnesota, golfers were greeting the sunshine at the Eagle Valley Golf Course in suburban St. Paul that opened Tuesday — weeks earlier than last year's chilly, soggy spring start. Within an hour of its post-lunch opening, dozens of players were on the course, head golf pro Dan Moris said.
"We're hoping this is a sign of good things to come," Moris said.
The ice rink was empty at Chicago's iconic Millennium Park, where crowds were instead strolling and admiring the reflection of the skyline in a large, mirror-surfaced sculpture known as the Bean.
Nearby, new city residents Katie and Chris Anderson left work early to spend their second wedding anniversary on a tennis court. They said they were surprised by the weather because of Chicago's legendary cold winter.
"I was really nervous about moving here," Katie Anderson said.canada goose parka jacketspedestrians traded puffy jackets moncler outerwear Her husband added: "We expected the worst."
In Boston,Cheap ArcTeryx Alpha Sale and knit hats for short sleeves. At a tanning salon in the city's Seaport District, a pair of flip-flops sat in front of one tanning booth, and a pair of sneakers rested by another.
"Everyone definitely has spring fever," employee B-Jay Angiulo said, adding that it was a good sign for business that two of the six tanning booths were full before 5 p.m. "I think the sun's out so people want to get a little spring color going on."
In Tennessee, where temperatures since December have been 4 degrees above normal, tourism officials said the weather should help their industry, including the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, country music attractions in Nashville and Elvis Presley's Graceland home in Memphis.

MP in Snowdonia safety app launch

A safety campaign is being launched today (February 13th) in connection with a new app for smartphone users who like to go walking in Snowdonia, with the local member of parliament among those involved.

Even with appropriate equipment like winter jackets and crampons,,canada goose parka jackets Shirts at low prices! those on the mountains may face various dangers in winter such as severe weather and MP Hywel Roberts is attending the event at Pen-y-Pas.

In addition to the daily weather report, the Mountain Info Services Project also includes five videos showing people how to prepare for winter walking and stay safe in the hills.

The success of the initiative will be determined by a fall in the number of mountain rescue call-outs as better informed walkers learn how to take care of themselves and their companions out on the mountains.

Recent incidents in Snowdonia include the rescue of a man walking north of Capel Curig who got lost in cloud, with his batteries having failed in both his walking GPS and mobile phone.

He had called his wife to raise the alarm, but she did not know his intended route.

Higher humidity brings rain and t-storms this week

Umbrellas, jackets, t-shirts and sunscreen make up the forecast for the rest of this week says WeatherWatch.co.nz as a system that brought isolated flooding to parts of south eastern Australia drifts towards New Zealand.
Heat and humidity will today combine to make "feels like" temperatures in the late 20s and low 30s across parts of New Zealand - even if your daily high is only in the low to mid 20s. This will happen if you get plenty of sun to help heat the air first.

It's this daytime heating which could trigger thunderstorms and torrential downpours across northern and western regions of the North Island later today. WeatherWatch.co.nz says downpours may be heavy enough to cause localised surface flooding and could make driving hazardous.
But our chaotic summer weather pattern remains in place - while some communities could be hit by rainfall rates heavy enough to flood drains and cause surface flooding, a kilometre away it may only be drizzling. Another kilometre away it may be still sunny.

This is the nature of this fairly weak low that is moving in - the cloud mass surrounding it is very much alive, shrinking and growing all the time - and it's this constant change that makes it tricky to time things and to be more specific.
As we head into Wednesday we'll be left with a similar forecast to Tuesday, heavy downpours for some - especially inland where the heating will help - while lighter showers and drizzle may be experienced elsewhere.

The North Island will receive the bulk of the rain, while southern and eastern areas of the country should be driest.
Humidity will work with the heat this week to make conditions feel hotter than they are says WeatherWatch.co.nz.

The humidex, which works out the air temperature combined with humidity to create a somewhat subjective feels like temperature - is calculating that although highs will only be in the low to mid 20s this week, the feels like temperature will be in the late 20s and low 30s at times for some who get the sun.
WeatherWatch.co.nz exclusively uses the humidex temperatures, also used by the public forecaster in Canada. It's most accurate for inland areas away from sea breezes where highs climb into the late 20s and humidex readings can climb upwards to 40 degrees.

While high humidity is common all year round in New Zealand, it's the summer humidity that makes conditions feel muggy.
So far this summer we've had some very humid days, but without the heat many people haven't really been aware of it.,canada goose parka jackets Shirts at low prices!

In winter high humidity is normal, but with cooler air we tend to only notice it as damp air, which makes mould in many homes.
In summer the same humidity levels coupled with heat can make small physical tasks difficult, make our skin sticky and make sleeping hard.

For those who don't have heat pumps with the air con feature, a simple cheap fan pointed at your body can be very effective - by producing a localised wind chill factor on your body. Coupled with slightly damp skin it can be incredibly refreshing.
Opening windows only helps if there's a breeze - or if the temperature outside is lower than indoors...and sometimes in summer, it isn't.
This week we'll see overnight lows between 18 and 20 degrees for the upper North Island - which will make a humidex temperature in the low to mid 20s for some who have no breeze.

Anti-Putin movement plans new rallies

Analysts said the budding movement has kept its momentum a month ahead of Russia's presidential polls, after its latest rally repeated the success of previous protests despite freezing temperatures.

Bundled up in down jackets, sheepskin coats and felt boots, protesters turned up on Saturday for their third rally.

"It is important that the number of people is not going down despite the cold and the fact that this is already their third rally," said Maria Lipman, editor at Pro et Contra journal published by the Carnegie Moscow Center.

"People's convictions are only growing stronger," she said.

The march on Bolotnaya Square over the Moscow river from the Kremlin was the third mass rally since fraud-tainted December 4 parliamentary elections sparked demonstrations that smashed the taboo against protests in Putin's Russia.

"We will come again,,canada goose parka jackets have always been on the priority list of males." organisers wrote on their Facebook page on Sunday morning under a picture of protestors sending hundreds of balloons into the Moscow winter sky.

One the chief organisers of the anti-Putin movement, politician Vladimir Ryzhkov, said he did not rule out holding a mass rally on February 26, one week before the polls, though most likely it would be a smaller "flash mob" action.

"The big meeting is going to be on March 11 since, as far as I am aware, the extent of the fraud in the presidential elections is going to be huge."

Jackets lead Wells Fargo Cup standings

Roanoke Rapids High School is off to a good start in its quest for a third consecutive Wells Fargo Conference Cup championship as the best overall athletic program in the Northern Carolina 2-A Conference.

During the fall athletic season, Roanoke Rapids won the conference championship in women's tennis and shared league titles in football and men's soccer. "We were consistent," Roanoke Rapids athletic director Tim Bennett said. "Our footcanada goose parkaball and soccer programs had to come back from early setbacks to win shares of the conference championship. We were first or second in every sport but one, and volleyball showed improvement throughout the season and ended up in the middle of the pack. A conference championship is worth eight points. Second place is worth seven points. The scoring continues all the way to eighth place, which is worth one point.

Corinth Holders and Franklinton head into the winter season tied for second place with 34 points each. Corinth Holders swept the cross country titles. Franklinton didn't have a conference championship but was near the top of the standings in most sports. Bunn edged North Johnston for fourth place, 31.5 to 31. Louisburg (16.5), Warren County (13.5) and Northwest Halifax (9.5) finished sixth through eighth respectively.

Though conference action in the winter athletic season is still early, Bunn appears ready to make a move with its basketball programs in the running to sweep the men's and women's titles. Corinth Holders appears to have a chance at challenging for the NCC lead through the winter standings with its swimming, wrestling and men's basketball programs, creating a three-way chase for the Conference Cup Championship during the spring athletic season.

"No question it will come down to the spring season," Bennett said. "It appears we will finish well in men's and women's swimming. We'll have to see where our basketball and wrestling teams finish up. It's still early in the conference season. We have 146 student athletes participating in sports during the winter athletic season."

Thanks to all who helped in winter coats cause

The Rotary Club of Orange had a great opportunity to provide brand new warm winter coats to Bridgeport and New Haven school children through a nonprofit organization, Operation Warm. By partnering with the Bridgeport Rotary Club we were able to secure more than 4,600 new coats. It was a huge undertaking and we wish to thank all who helped to make this project a success. Due to the quick response and cooperation we received from: Delores Mason, NNPS district facilitator from BOE Parent Center, who coordinated the distribution in Bridgeport; as well as Neil Nepiarsky from New Haven Moving Equipment, who arranged for a tractor-trailer to pick up the coats in Pennsylvania and transport them to Connecticut; Tony Gallo, of Star Distributors, canada goose parka jackets for the warehouse space; and to Phil Grande, of Soundview Landscape Supply, moncler outerwear who provided a forklift and an operator to empty the truck, we were able to distribute the jackets.canada goose winter jackets

Slate Reader, Photo Detective

I have come to realize that Slate readers are a remarkably detail-oriented bunch. But I was still impressed when, earlier this week, Alan Cobo-Lewis pointed out that a photo in this slide show was backwards. He noticed that Dwight Eisenhower and General Raoul Vernouxmen's coats buttons appeared on the "feminine," righthand side, while the First Lady's coat buttons appeared on the masculine, lefthand side—an unlikely occurrence when this photo was taken, authentic moncler coats in 1951.canada goose parka jackets, wholesale canada goose outlet

"The photo of Mamie Eisenhower and friends is backwards. Note how Ike's and Vernoux's coat buttons [follow] the women's convention and the first lady's coat buttons [fit] with the men's convention," he wrote us. (Why do men's and women's clothes differ in this way? The most common theory is that while even well-off men traditionally dressed themselves, wealthy women had the help of maids, who, authentic moncler jackets womensauthentic north face jackets if righthanded, would find it easier to work with buttons on the righthand side; this, however, is disputed.)

Once we'd confirmed that indeed everyone's jackets seemed to button the wrong way, we noticed another problem: Looking closely, you'll see that Vernoux is shaking hands with someone out of the frame—using his left hand. We hadn't done any Photoshopping ourselves, so we checked with Getty Photos, who in turn got in touch with AFP's documentalists, who confirmed that the image needed to be rotated. They corrected the error by rescanning the image and resubmitting it to the various appropriate archives.

Restyling and recycling old fur is a popular option this season

Doris Randall hadn't worn her brown bomber mink coat in ages. Her full-length shearling coat got even less use -- she wore it about twice in the 15 years since her husband gave it to her.

She considered giving the garments to charity before discovering Seleh's De Federal Hill, a tailor and furrier specializing in remodeling leathers and furs. A few months later, Randall had a new three-quarter-length coat for herself and a contemporary-looking mink vest with black sweater sleeves that she gave to her daughter.

"It was a lot like putting together a puzzle," the Pikesville, Md., resident said. "They made it work, and made something that we are both enjoying. I've been able to get a lot of wear throughout the winter. I saw the vest on my daughter the other day."

The days of bulky furs are over. Cost-conscious consumers, environmental concerns and changing fashion trends have made recycling and refashioning furs a popular option in recent years. As a result, a growing number of furriers, designers and boutique owners are cashing in on the trend and are catering to a new crop of customers.

Furs are prime candidates for refashioning; people typically don't throw them away because of their costs and sentimental feelings associated with the garment, according to Karen Groner, an adjunct professor specializing in leather design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Groner, who has 30 years of experience in the business,

also owns Grownbeans, a small Manhattan studio that specializes in suede, leather and fur.

"We associate wearing (fur) coats with it being a special occasion," Groner said. "There's a real attraction. They are associated with happy times. ... People want to hold on to that memory. But they also want to keep up with the style. Fashion changes. A coat doesn't look good with those '80s shoulder pads."

Seleh Rahman, owner of Seleh's De Federal Hill, said remodeled fur projects are up 75 percent at his shop.

"The last three seasons, it has been a big-ticket item," Rahman said from his South Charles Street workroom, where he was in the process of lengthening a mink coat. His assistant was putting the finishing touches on the fur-trim collar accents of a cashmere coat.

Rahman takes older, heavier furs and turns them into thinner, more contemporary-looking jackets and vests. He's also known for his ability to create virtually any garment from fur pieces, including handbags, decorative trim for jean jackets and bow ties.

"It's a complicated process," said Rahman, who has operated the business for the last 36 years. "You have to be really skilled, so that the furs can match and look correct. Really, you only get one shot."

The labor and skill required to complete a fur redesign doesn't come cheap, and projects can cost several thousand dollars.

"It takes a lot of work to rework a coat," Groner said. "You have to completely take it apart and completely put it back together. And then you pray that it holds up."

A complete fur redesign project usually takes about four to six weeks. During this time, pelts are restored, oiled, and refashioned. Customers typically meet with the designer several times for fittings and to discuss pattern options.

Mano Swartz, the Green Spring Station furrier, offers a "Mano-makeover," in which the company promises to repurpose outdated furs into contemporary lightweight pieces in four to six weeks. Prices range from $450 for a pull-string caplet to $2,750 for a reversible coat.

"It's much less expensive to redo something than to buy something new," said Debbie Swartz, the designer and buyer at Mano Swartz. She noticed a significant spike in refashioned and repaired furs three years ago. "It's really nice to be able to show them the options that they didn't know existed."

The downturn in the economy has also increased business for shops that can restore coats, saving owners the cost of replacing them.

Erin Hopkins has had her eight-year-old black mink coat repaired by Rahman a couple of times in the past few years, including having the pockets repaired and the sleeves redone.

Why hasn't she given the coat away?

"I worked hard for that coat," the Federal Hill resident said with a laugh. Hopkins' husband gave it to her as a reward for attending 15 University of Texas football games with him. "It took me 19 years to get that coat."

Fur has also remained a staple in fashion, especially in the colder months, and designers have shown it some love recently. Gucci's 1970s-inspired fall and winter lines for 2011 and 2012 seem to have jump-started the latest fur resurgence, according to fashion experts. As a result, many designers scrambled to find fur to accent garments.

Swartz points to Gucci's collection when helping customers choose new ways to refashion older garments. "I try and show our customers what is going on in fashion now," she said. "Some customers really get it and love it."

Karen Garalde, a Baltimore-based designer who specializes in using eco-friendly materials, has also been following the trends and is in the process of designing several pieces using recycled fur.

"This season I knew that I wanted to play with more texture," Garalde said. "I love vintage fur. I thought it would be fun and interesting.,canada goose parka jackets have always been on the priority list of males. I noticed that there has been a huge trend for fur this season."

Garalde, who has made garments from items such as coffee filters and salvaged fabrics, said she has few reservations about using vintage furs.

"Since it's not new, I feel better about it," Garalde said. "I know that it is sustainable. That's what makes me more intrigued to use it."

Environmental implications played a large factor when Hampden boutique owner Linda Pfleiderer decided to carry Harricana, a Canadian-based line of recycled fur products.

"We loved the concept of recycling and giving new life to things that would be thrown away," said Pfleiderer, who co-owns In The Details, a men's and women's boutique that has been open less than a year. "We thought it was a really cool line."

Customers have responded favorably, purchasing handbags, fur accented hats, scarves, and cross-body bags. Pieces range from $26 up to $514.

Her customers "are really into the fur, and they are into the recycled aspect. It's really good for the environment," Pfleiderer said. "And they are getting really cool-looking pieces."

Above all, customers like the look of recycled fur pieces, according to merchants.

"I love when customers come in and say they never wore it, and now it is their everyday coat," Swartz said. "That makes me so happy. We can always craft a coat. There is always something we can do."

Randall, the Pikesville resident who had two of her furs redesigned, is pleased with her new garments.

"I consider him an extremely lucky find," she said of Rahman. "I was going in blind. I was extremely pleased. My friends have beaten a path to his door."
