London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2012 Show Report: Burberry

Just as at the Oscars, the red carpet arrivals for the Burberry catwalk presentation are so spectacular that you'd be forgiven for forgetting that the parade of A-list faces and killer glamourwear is not, in fact, the main event for which we are all gathered.

There's Clemence Posey looking sexily dishevelled in a burgundy spotty blouse... There's Kate Bosworth with those bewitching mis-matched eyes in a grey owl motif jumper….There's Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley, all pouty in a cropped tweed jacket... and Alexa Chung in a sexy black trench coat, bare legs and loafers…And there's Eddie Redmayne wearing… well, who cares? It's Eddie Redmayne.

Yes, it's A-list all the way at Burbs.

So by the time the catwalk show soundtrack begins, the Burberry Prorsum Autumn Winter 2012 collection has a lot to live up to, to compete with that front row line-up. But, no worries, because next season is a killer collection from Burberry.

The show opened with boldly striped flared skirts, worn with cropped tweed jackets and striped or tweed trench coats with knitwear-slim sleeves. There are fitted owl motif knits, and English gentlemen green country check trenches with huge gamekeeper pockets. And there are peplums, peplums, peplums. On cinched waist tweed jackets (highlighted with tiny bow belts), on rich gold or burgundy brocade floral dresses and skirts. It's all about the waist for next season at Burberry.

As ever, for the British luxury label, outerwear is key; jackets, trenches, coats – all either long and cinch-waisted, or fitted and cropped. But oh my, those tweed skirts look good – pencil thin with an extravagant ruffle at the front. Followed by classic pencil skirts in beautiful velvets in quietly luxurious off shades of olive, mink and plum, worn with skinny sheepskin bombers or cropped fitted tweed jackets.

And with every outfit, comes the most perfect skinny-heeled ankle boots worn with ribbed tights (make a note for next season's go-to footwear), and deluxe gloves; long and studded or short and coloured snakeskin (yellow gloves with an olive coat – love it).

Burberry sure knows how to pick the right faces, on the catwalk as well as the red carpet. Our cheap canada goose generally gives all variations of lower price canada goose parka, Could Edie Campbell look any more “now” in a reinvented garbardine and tweed panelled trenchcoat and that thick Sixties fringe? Could Cara Delevigne look any more doll-like, all baby blonde hair and platinum skin in a deep plum velvet frockcoat with a sharply defined waist, and studded gloves? Could Jourdan Dunn look any more sophisticated in a sheepskin bomber jacket and pencil skirt? already looking like one of the hottest new silhouettes for next season.
