Reverend Terry Troia, Executive Director of Project Hospitality, said that it's a great opportunity for Staten Islanders to help out other this winter.

Atlantic Hockey Wrap

The Falcons are back on top of the Atlantic Hockey standings. After a slow start to 2012, the Falcons are off and running, riding a six game unbeaten streak. The Falcons swept RIT this weekend, surrendering just two goals. Jason Torf received both starts in net and produced his first shutout of the season on Friday. Tim Kirby had a goal and two assists. He has recorded points in eight of the last 10 games.

AIC – The Yellow Jackets scored just one goal while being swept by Holy Cross. Niellson Arcibal scored his sixth of the year to account for the Yellow Jackets only scoring.

Army – The Black Knights are riding a winning streak for the first time this season. Their 9-1 victory over the Royal Military Academy. Mike Hull, Zak Zaremba, and Danny Colvin all scored twice for the Black Knights. Marcel Alvarez chipped in with three assists. Matt Walsh made his first appearance of the season in net, stopping both shots he faced.

Bentley – The Falcons needed a last minute goal in order to get a tie with Sacred Heart on Saturday and come away with three points. Brett Gensler scored with 0.2 seconds left to tie the game. Gensler added an assist on Friday to add to his team leading 32 points. Justin Brenton scored twice for a career high four goals on the season.

Canisius – The Golden Griffins took a hit to their hopes of moving up to get a first round playoff bye. Their weekend split with Robert Morris puts them five points out of fourth. They finish the season with series against RIT, Niagara and Mercyhurst. Kyle Gibbons had two goals and two assists for the Golden Griffins. He has set career highs in assist (14) adn points (24) while his 10 goals ties his career high. Taylor Law had a goal and two assists on Friday for his seventh multi-point game of the year.

UConn – The Huskies played their last nonconference game of the season on Tuesday when they fell to Princeton. The Huskies were up 3-1 after the first period but couldn’t hold the lead as Princeton scored three straight to take the win. Cole Schneider scored his team leading 13th goal of the year and now has at least one point in three straight games. Miles Winter also scored for the second straight game.

Holy Cross – The Crusades continue to hang around, just six points out of first. And a sweep of AIC was a big boost. The wins were the first for the Crusaders since Jan. 14. Adam Schmidt had two goals and three assists on the weekend. They were his first multi-point games since Dec. 30. His 21 points equals his production from last season and ranks second on the team. Eric Vos picked up a pair of assists to set new career highs in assists (10) and points (20). Brandon Nunn recorded his first career hat trick on Friday and has a career high 11 goals on the season.

Mercyhurst – The Lakers won for the first time in four games and moved within one point of first place after a split with Niagara. Nick Jones had two assists for the Lakers while Paul Chiasson had a goal and an assist. Jones now has recorded points in four of the last five games. The Lakers had four different players score each of their goals on the weekend.

Niagara – The Purple Eagles finally lost a game. After seven straight games, the Purple Eagles fell to Mercyhurst. It’s the first loss for the Purple Eagle since Jan. 7. But the Purple Eagles did get two points on the weekend, downing meryhurst on Friday. Ryan Murphy returned to the Purple Eagles lineup with a bang, scoring three goals and assisting on another two. The five points double his season output. Patrick Divjak continues to roll, picking up a goal and an assist. He’s now recorded at least one point in six of the last seven games.

Robert Morris – The Colonials sit just two points out of fourth place and a potential first round bye in the playoffs after a weekend split with Canisius. RIT – The Tigers were swept for the first time in conference play this year. Michael Colavecchia and Greg Noyes scored the only goals for the Tigers this weekend. Anti-Putin movement plans new rallies

Analysts said the budding movement has kept its momentum a month ahead of Russia's presidential polls, after its latest rally repeated the success of previous protests despite freezing temperatures.

NWS: Small Craft Advisory in Effect Thru Thursday; USCG Advises Caution

The NWS advises inexperienced Mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, to avoid boating in these conditions.

If travel by boat is necessary, exercise caution, especially near reef lines and when entering or leaving harbors and inlets.

In addition the U.S. Coast Guard has issued a warning to Mariners about the hazerdous seas.

A release from the Coast Guard states:

Coast Guard Sector Guam warns boaters and beach goers to exercise caution in all waters across Micronesia through the week. The National Weather Service has issued a high surf and small craft advisory for all coastal waters surrounding Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan.

Through Monday afternoon, surf is predicted to build 7 to 9 feet in Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan. Areas around north facing reefs will be especially hazardous but are seas expected to subside below hazardous levels by noon.

Despite the subsiding high surf, a Small Craft Advisory will be in effect for all the islands through Thursday. Combined seas peaking near 10 feet can be expected throughout the week, making conditions exceptionally dangerous for small vessels and swimmers. The National Weather Service recommends mariners operating small vessels should avoid operating in these conditions.

Mariners should only travel if necessary and check the current and forecasted weather conditions prior to getting underway. These conditions are especially hazardous when entering or leaving harbors and near inlets and reef lines. Mariners should remain aware of changing conditions once on the water. Coast Guard Sector Guam advises mariners: if in doubt, don’t go out!

Boaters are strongly encouraged to have a VHF marine radio on board to monitor weather conditions, communicate with other mariners and call for help in the event of an emergency. The Coast Guard reminds all mariners that channel 16 is the emergency channel and is monitored around-the-clock.

In addition, marinas and local boaters are reminded to check that boats in port are properly secured, bilge pumps are functional, and all loose items are removed from decks. Report any boats adrift, pollution or other maritime emergencies to the Coast Guard Sector Guam Command Center at 671-564-USCG.

Before you take to the water, Coast Sector Guam advises mariners to consider the following:

Leave a float plan with a responsible individual who knows your intentions, location and who they should call if you do not return as scheduled.
Always have flares and other visual distress signals on board. Inspect them regularly; they can save your life and help rescuers find you at night should you be in distress.
Wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket and set the example for your passengers or paddling partners. Before getting underway, verify you have enough life jackets for everyone on board.
Maintain awareness on the water — be aware of activity around your vessel including changing weather, and always know your location.
Don’t boat alone — boating alone is not recommended. Recreational paddlers canoeists and kayakers often travel with a single craft and one partner, or even solo, but it is recommended you canoe, kayak or boat with at least three people or two craft.

Lady Jackets' upset bid falls short against No. 8 Anchorage

The last time the Montana State University Billings women's basketball team played a nationally-ranked University of Alaska Anchorage team they just missed out on recording an upset over the then ninth-ranked Seawolves. Thursday night, it was a similar result, this time on the Yellowjackets' home court, as MSUB was unable to pull off the upset over eighth-ranked Alaska Anchorage as the Seawolves held on over the closing seconds to secure a 56-51 win.

With their four-game winning streak broken, the Yellowjackets move to 16-8 overall and 8-5 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action while the Seawolves bounced back from a Thursday-night letdown at the hands of Seattle Pacific University to record the win, improving to 20-4 overall and 11-2 in the league.

"I was very happy with how we competed tonight," said head coach Kevin Woodin. "I thought we were mentally ready to go and was very proud to see that from our players. You have to give Anchorage a lot of credit, are very talented and very well-coached; they guarded Bobbi hard all night, but we started making the extra pass and that opened some shots for some other people there in the first half.

"The big difference in the game came in the second half as we appeared to run out of gas," Woodin stated. "We had several open looks that we were hitting in the first half, but we just couldn't get them to go down there in the second."

A poor shooting performance in the second half cut the Yellowjackets' bid for the upset short as MSUB struggled from the field, hitting just 20.7% (6-29) of their second-half shots. Overall, MSUB hit on just 27.9% of their looks from the field and were out-rebounded by Anchorage 47-34.

Freshman Quinn Peoples led the way for the Yellowjackets with 16 total points including sinking four three-pointers. The Butte,canada goose parka Mont. native recorded 11 of her points, and three of her treys in the first half of play.

Behind Peoples, MSUB had an extremely balanced attack as six other Yellowjackets recorded at least two points. Bobbi Knudsen and Kalli Stanhope each finished the game with nine points while Kayleen Goggins recorded eight points. Knudsen recorded a game-high five assists and two steals and matched Stanhope with four rebounds.

Alaska Anchorage was led by guard Haley Holmstead with a game-high 19 points as she went 7-17 from the fiend and hit four of her seven free throw attempts. Behind Holmstead, Kaylie Robison went 6-8 from the field en route to tallying 14 points as part of a double-double that included 13 rebounds.

Despite the final outcome, the young Yellowjackets showed signs of brilliance throughout the game, playing at an extremely high-pace with the nationally-ranked Seawolves.

The game was close all game long after Goggins started the scoring off with a short jumper. MSUB would control the early going of the game and established a seven-point lead when Brooke Tolman drained her lone three-pointer of the game just six minutes into the half.

The Seawolves battled back over the next three minutes to eventually claim a short lead after Holmstead hit an open three-pointer, but the Yellowjackets would regain the lead with four minutes remaining in the half.

The lead would be extended out to five points (32-27) by the time the buzzer sounded for half time with the momentum slightly favoring the home squad which Stanhope attempted to bolster by draining an open trey with just 15 seconds ticking off the game clock into the second half.

But Holmstead would have an answer with a three-pointer of her own, and before long, the Yellowjackets would be scrapping for every point they could muster. At one point, the Seawolves went on a 16-8 run over a 13 minute stretch to claim the lead. During that stretch, MSUB hit just two shots from the field.

The Yellowjackets made a furious attempt to find the bottom of the net, but were unable to overcome the deficit.

As they have done all season, MSUB was able to out-score their opposition 13-5 in regards to points off of turnovers, but Alaska Anchorage dominated the paint and under the basket as they out-scored MSUB 34-6 in the paint. That number included an 18-4 advantage off second-chance looks in favor of Anchorage.

Despite the setback, Coach Woodin was still confident following the game that his team was making strides.

"I feel like foul trouble underneath hurt us down the stretch as we weren't able to compete with their three, four and five girls under the basket," Woodin said. "But I was very proud of our team because they fought all the way to the end. We are looking forward to this last segment of the season and it is important that we continue to work hard all the way through to the end."

The Yellowjackets will now prepare to hit the road for the final time this season. MSUB will first travel to Central Washington University on Thursday, Feb. 9 before turning their focus on Northwest Nazarene University on Saturday, Feb. 10. Thursday's game will tip off at 7 p.m. while Saturday's match will commence at 1:30 p.m.
