With a new sailboat in tow, Dan Risland set out Friday with his three young sons for what was to have been a blissful, windy, spring afternoon on Clearwater Lake in northern Minnesota. But the outing turned deadly when a strong gust of wind caught their sail, capsizing the boat and throwing 2-year-old Jacob, 6-year-old Zech and 8-year-old Isaiah into the frigid lake water.
Of the three boys, only Isaiah survived. On Saturday, he was in critical condition at Children's Hospital of Minneapolis, with his devastated parents by his bedside.
"The kids were his entire life," said Rosie Miles, Risland's sister. "You never saw Danny without his kids."
The loss of the two young lives has rattled residents of the region near Risland's home in tiny Leonard, Minn., population of just 41. In the past decade, a similar incident has happened only once in Clearwater County, the sheriff said on Saturday.
Gadget Soule, Risland's sister-in-law, watched the boys leave with their father, thrilled to take the sailboat out for the first time. "They were all excited to go out and sail with Daddy," she said. "They lived for him, and he lived for them."
Several residents called Friday's accident a tragedy but said they were too emotional to talk. "It's devastating for us as a school and as a community," said Kristil McDonald, principal at Clearbrook-Gonvick Schools, where the two older boys were enrolled. "Everyone knows everyone. We'll all be grieving and dealing with the situation."
Risland and his three boys were avid outdoorsmen -- from ice fishing in the winter to riding ATVs in the summer. Miles said Risland had bought the sailboat just last week but was familiar with boats from years of fishing.
The family was sailing on Clearwater Lake, which overlaps Beltrami and Clearwater counties, about 30 miles northwest of Bemidji. About 3 p.m., strong winds tipped the boat over, Clearwater County Sheriff Mike Erickson said. Risland tried to get a hold of the boys, all wearing life jackets. But he struggled in the wind and waves, and was beginning to get hypothermia.
"He told the oldest one to watch his brothers," Erickson said, "and he swam to shore to get help."
Risland flagged down someone to call 911. New store in Mabel offers clothing, shoes and items that are 'New 2 U'
When operating a business in a small town, diversification is an important aspect. Stephanie Liddiard, owner of the Split Endz salon in Mabel, recently joined forces with her mother, Gennette Halverson, to add another element to her business location on Mabel's Main Street. It's New 2 U features a wide variety of items, including children's clothing, name-brand jeans, shoes, handbags and jewelry, baby supplies, maternity clothes and even prom dresses for the season of formal dances.
After purchasing the building last year from Don and Betty Gjere, the mother-daughter team decided to utilize the basement area of the salon to create a store that would feature gently-used, good-quality clothing and other items.
Liddiard explained that she has always been a fan of stores like Once Upon a Child and the Children's Exchange in Rochester because they provide an economical option for clothing and baby supplies. "In this economy, being able to buy nice things at a reasonable cost is important," she said. "As a single mom, I raised my kids and clothed myself on second-hand clothing."

Ottawa Senators fans fear for goalies ahead of NHL playoffs
Ottawa Senators fans can be forgiven a thought of "oh no, not again," watching a starting goaltender get hurt on Saturday night.
It's a movie they've seen too many times, and it's particularly scary when a spot in the NHL playoffs is far from secured.
The Stanley Cup playoffs begin April 11.
All things considered, it could have been worse. Ben Bishop's "lower body" injury (groin suspected), suffered during the second period of Ottawa's 8-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, is expected to keep him out of action for a couple of weeks, according to Senators head coach Paul MacLean.
But at least this time the top goalie on the depth chart has recovered from his own injury.
Craig Anderson, who missed a month of games with a severed tendon in his small finger, was able to come on in relief of Bishop to record Saturday's victory and was the starter in Winnipeg Monday night.
Alex Auld backed up Anderson and prospect Robin Lehner is standing by in Binghamton, New York, if needed by the weekend.
So, the fire is out, for now.
Still, something about this position and this team causes the community to expect the worst when a goaltender hits the proverbial canvas, especially at this time of year.
While people wear out the expression 'Goalie Graveyard' in reference to the Senators, history would suggest more of a goaltender curse, or goalie infirmary.
Watching Bishop go down and then hobble off the ice in obvious distress, set me thinking about the huge impact goaltender injuries have had on this franchise.
It isn't a stretch to suggest that, in recent seasons, goalie injuries have: robbed the Senators of their best chance at a Stanley Cup; cost the club millions of dollars; got one general manager fired; threatened another; and caused goalies to get bought out and/or cast off.
If it weren't for goalie "booboos" to use a Paul MacLean term, the Senators almost certainly would have won a Cup in either 2006 or 2007. Because of a debilitating adductor injury to Dominik Hasek, who was at the peak of his powers until he got hurt at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, the Senators had to rely on an inexperienced Ray Emery for both those playoff seasons.
Though Emery played admirably, he was no Hasek, and the impact reverberated for years.
The club was so ticked at Hasek's demise (he practised at a very high level during the first round loss to Buffalo, but refused to test himself in a game), they cut him loose and so he went to Detroit and helped the Red Wings win the 2008 Stanley Cup (Chris Osgood was the main starter in the playoffs).
Would the Senators have kept Zdeno Chara if weren't for Hasek's injury?

Wisely, Murray used that pick to buy himself some goaltender insurance, selecting Lehner in the 2009 entry draft.
Murray needed that Lehner pick more than he realized, because Leclaire would be wracked with injuries over the next two seasons, the notion of him being a No. 1 in Ottawa a complete disaster. In 2010-11, while earning $4.8 million, Leclaire started 14 games for the Senators and won four of them.
By late winter of 2011, his team reeling, and fans calling for him to be fired, Murray pulled off yet another goalie trade, swapping Brian Elliott for Anderson. This one paid off, as Anderson played brilliantly down the stretch, was re-signed to a four year deal (let's see how that story angle plays out), and has been healthy, until the kitchen knife incident of Feb. 22.
Most of Emery's health issues were not on Ottawa's watch, the Senators bought out his contract due to office, character issues. Curiously, they were still paying Emery the day he walked in here earlier this month and beat the Senators 2-1.

Good Samaritans Pull Over To Battle Blaze
Only 11 News has the video of good Samaritans, drivers, who pulled over to help put out a fire in the middle of a busy street.
KKTV photographer Dustin Cuzick, along with several passersby, was on scene before firefighters. He grabbed the fire extinguisher out of the 11 News live truck to help those battling the blaze.moncler outerwear
A handful of good Samaritans got out of their cars to start fighting the fire that broke out in a median along Powers near Hancock. They used shovels,canada goose parka jackets, and anything they could find in their car. Joe Ostrand stopped to help.

"The concern was that it would jump across the road and if it jumps across the road there it's going to burn for a long way before it stops," Christian said.
We spoke to Cimmaron Hills Fire Chief Matt Love about what happened. CSFD said they're not sure at this time what sparked the blaze.

Layers: The trick for unpredictable weather
